My vision was hijacked! How did my vision get bogged down and re written by others who didn’t even understand the vision? Why do people assume they know the vision when they have never even talked to me about the vision? How did your vision replace the vision God has already given?
As I have spent time talking with leaders and hearing how they had visions for things and then the vision was taken off track there seems to be two common denominators. One is that people started to complain and tear down the vision and two people started to impose their own ideas on what the God given vision was and took the vision in a direction it was never intended to go.
Staying on task, fighting the right battles, working with enthusiasm. These are all important things to do when we are feeling under attack or feeling discouraged.. We know Nehemiah was under attack and it was going to get worse in the future.
Then I prayed, “Hear us, our God, for we are being mocked. May their scoffing fall back on their own heads, and may they themselves become captives in a foreign land! Do not ignore their guilt. Do not blot out their sins, for they have provoked you to anger here in front ofthe builders.”
At last the wall was completed to half its height around the entire city, for the people had worked with enthusiasm.
What did Nehemiah do? He asks God to deal with them! He prayed and handed them over to God. In fact he points out that these guys are really provoking God, and not he and his team of builders. Yes they were being mocked, but since Nehemiah and his team were doing what God asked them to do, Sanballat and his crew were actually railing at God!
We don’t know what Nehemiah said to the builders after the prayer but we know this, they didn’t get sidetracked and taken off course by those who had set out to hinder the work. I think Nehemiah probably said something like ” hey guys, don’t listen to these people. We are here to do what God has called us to do, we are here to build as God has led us. Let’s focus our time and energy on the task at hand and let God deal with this other foolishness”
Guess what happened?
Neh 4:6 At last the wall was completed to half its height around the entire city, for the people had worked with ENTHUSIASM.
I love this so much! In the face of opposition, the majority of those entrusted to build the wall didn’t get torn down like the walls had been, but they were built up like the walls they were repairing.
We need to keep the vision before us and know the only real thing worthy of our time and energy is fulfilling the vision. Somehow, in the midst of things, the people realized every brick they put in the wall got them closer to fulfilling the vision. Every time they were distracted, or had their attention focused on the naysayers, it meant they were further away from the fulfillment of the vision and it would take longer to get the wall being built. These delays would then cause other people to think it will never happen! As leaders we get to choose what we focus on! Sometimes it is good to have tunnel vision!
